Refurbish or Renovate?
In many instances a bathroom refurbishment can be a better option than a full bathroom renovation.
There’s no hiding a bathroom in need of refurbishment or renovation. Dated tiles, failed and mouldy grout, inefficient use of space and peeling paint. These are all pretty standard in older bathrooms across Australia no matter how well they’ve been looked after.
Thankfully, bathroom renovations don’t always have to be an expensive affair, older bathrooms can be refurbished on a budget with a bit of creativity and professional help and, if you know what you’re doing it’s not hard to keep a lid the cost.
The advantages of refurbishing your bathroom
- Bathroom refurbishment is significantly cheaper that a full renovation.
- You can choose how much or how little work you want to carry out.
- Bathroom refurbishment is an environmentally friendly alternative to a full renovation. Refurbishing uses less resources in construction and you still get all of the benefits of water saving fixtures and fittings.
- Refurbishing your bathroom is generally a much quicker process than undertaking a full renovation.
- Refurbishing is a sensible solution if you live in a unit, townhouse or apartment as the work doesn’t require major plumbing works, or inconvenience neighbours as much as a full bathroom renovation.
What does a bathroom refurbishment entail?
When we undertake a full bathroom renovation we usually strip the room back to the bare walls and floor and build your dream bathroom from scratch. This includes any plumbing and electrical works, new tiling to the walls and floors, relocating the shower recess if necessary and fitting new fixtures, fittings and screens. In effect a renovation entails completely rebuilding your bathroom.
When we refurbish a bathroom we do so by undertaking as much or as little work that’s needed to give you the bathroom you want in the budget you’ve allocated.
A simple refurbishment may be simply to remove all of the old, mouldy grout and sealant from the bathroom and replacing it with Mapei’s epoxy grouts and silicones. These products are completely waterproof which seals any leaks there may be in the shower and, because they are colourfast and mould resistant your bathroom will look clean for years to come.
Some people want to take the process a stage further and for these clients we’ll replace all of the taps, the shower rose and shower screen to give the whole room a lift. Others ask for a more comprehensive refurbishment where the fixtures and fittings such as the vanity, towel rails and even the toilet are also replaced.
When required, we’ll undertake a complete bathroom refurbishment where the tiles are also removed and the room stripped but no major plumbing works are undertaken. In a full refurbishment the vanity, shower and toilet all stay in the same places in the room. A full refurbishment is quicker and cheaper than a renovation but effectively the end result looks and feels the same. You have a new bathroom at a significantly less expensive cost than a full renovation.
